Alberta ASCD FAQ'S

1.  What is Alberta ASCD?

MISSION

 Alberta ASCD, an affiliate of ASCD International, is a diverse community of educators committed to quality public education. We provide to our membership professional development opportunities that result in improved teaching and learning.

BELIEFS

 We believe that

•  all individuals have intrinsic worth;

•  all individuals have the ability and the desire to learn: all individuals learn at different rates and in different ways;

•  schools should model and teach good character;

•  all individuals should value learning and take responsibility for their education;

•  learning is a lifelong process;

•  all individuals have right to safety, love and opportunities to learn: "love" is interpreted to mean caring, respect and acceptance;

•  a high quality, equitable, public system of education open to all is imperative for society to flourish: the biggest impact on student achievement comes from high quality teaching;

•  diversity strengthens society and should be honored and protected (diversity of educational ideas, cultural, SES, teaching staff, learning styles);

•  broad, informed participation committed to a common good is critical to democracy: educators need to take an active role in promoting sound educational decisions;

•  humanity prospers when people work together.

AASCD also recognizes the potential and power of a healthy organization. We believe that.

•  healthy organizations purposefully provide for self-renewal;

•  the culture of an organization is a major factor shaping individual attitudes and behaviors;

•  shared values and common goals shape and change the culture of healthy organizations (values and goals need to be sound and ethical).
